Avery Bresllin took a leap of faith when she changed her name. As Avery Patterson, she is no longer the daughter of a serial killer. No longer the girl who was bullied and abused through high school. A fresh name and a fresh start at Columbia University means Avery can leave all that behind. There’s only one thing marring her dream of a clean slate….
A boy with a past of his own…
Luke Reid has a lot going for him: sex appeal, badass tattoos and insane musical talent. Despite his guitar skills, his calling in life has always been to serve and protect. A NYPD cop by day, singer in rock band D.M.F by night, from the outside Luke seems like he’s got it made. But falling for a girl whose father was accused of deeply sinister acts—a man whom Luke shared a devastating history with, himself—only serves to complicated things.
Pieces of a puzzle….
Four symbols, four methods of destruction.
Dark secrets that threaten to destroy.

How do you recover from fatal news thrown at your feet, shattering your existence? Everything you planned, dreamed, imagined for your life swept away in an instant. No one can truly heal from such devastating loss but with the perfect support, the impossible might be within reach.
Avery Patterson does her best to reinvent her reality after escaping to college. Changing her name provides her with her new start. No one knows Avery across the country and she likes it that way. She is able to make new friends and attempt to forget the horrific past. An unwelcome presence from her previous life swoops in unexpectedly and stomps all over her carefully constructed farce. Avery is not pleased to see him… no matter how handsome he is.
Luke Reid represents everything Avery has spent so long running away from. I fell for him instantly… hook, line, and sinker. Luke is solid and consistent, dark yet light, and beautifully emotional. His dialogue was created exquisitely and made Luke an extremely likeable hero. His stoic beliefs and determined attitude had me falling even harder. Total Prince Charming material… with a few jagged edges. Everyone has something to hide though, right?
Avery took longer for me to warm up to. She was always wavering on decisions and changing her mind about everything. Avery went through this horrible experience, which obviously changed her entire outlook on life. She is supposed to be broken and totally messed up, constantly battling a personal war with the past. Avery definitely plays the part so I applaud the author for clearly getting her character’s message across.
Winter is a suspenseful mystery that keeps on giving. The second half is where all the craziness happens and the skeletons leap out of the closet. One thing after the other… BAM! You’ll never experience a boring page. There are so many twists imbedded that my head was spinning with wonder. This story is so complex and intriguing that you have no choice but to keep reading. Secrets are slowly revealed and each time I felt shocked that the surprises kept unraveling. This is truly a special read that I hope you all take a chance to enjoy!

Callie has experienced many changes throughout her life, and gone through many ups and downs that have all worked towards shaping and molding her into the person she is today: fun loving, active, social, and hard working. The only thing that has remained a constant throughout her life is writing. Creating characters who will tear your conscience in two is a favorite pastime of Callie’s. There are few real saints and sinners in her books; more often, the denizens of her stories are all very human. Broken, flawed, and always with the potential for redemption.
